What’s on TV Sunday: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ and ‘Ballers’

“Star Trek: Discovery” introduces new faces in a different era, but retains the same overarching themes. And Spencer and Joe land promising deals in the Season 3 finale of “Ballers.”

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY 8:30 p.m. on CBS. This long-awaited iteration of the “Star Trek” franchise is set a decade before the original series of the 1960s.

The United Federation of Planets has fashioned a near-utopia, but its peace is threatened by the hostile Klingons, a humanoid warrior species. The crew answers to Starfleet First Officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green, “The Walking Dead”), a protégé of Spock’s father, the Vulcan Ambassador Sarek. In an interview with The New York Times, one of the creators, Alex Kurtzman, said this series could “live in the nuance and moral quandary that you don’t have time for in the films.” Episodes after the first will be available on the network’s streaming service, CBS All Access.

TEEN WOLF 8 p.m. on MTV. The fierce werewolf hunter Gerard (Michael Hogan) teams up with the Anuk-Ite, an invisible entity, to rid Beacon Hills of the protagonist Scott (Tyler Posey) and the rest of the town’s supernatural creatures.
