Apple, we know, is always improving the Apple Watch with new features. Recent rumors suggest that the next Watch will have a bigger screen, better sensors for monitoring the heart rate and so on.
Apple bought Beddit, a sleep tracking company, so there’s every reason to think there may be improvements in that direction.
And there have long been rumors that non-invasive glucose tracking is in the pipeline, though if you ask me it’s a long way off, if it is.
But a new patent, just revealed, and reported on by Apple Insider, suggests that Apple could have our well-being in mind in a different way, to protect the biggest organ in our bodies, our skin.
The patent suggests Watch wearers may be able to protect against sunburn using something called a UV-IR spectrometer, which, obviously, detects ultraviolet and infra-red. Here’s the top line of the patent:
Disclosed herein is a sunscreen detector for use with portable device, such as a mobile and/or wearable device. One variation of a sunscreen detector comprises an illumination system that is configured to illuminate a target skin area with ultraviolet and/or infrared spectrum light and a sensor system that is configured to detect the amount of ultraviolet and/or infrared spectrum light that is reflected from the target skin area.
