For awhile now, the question of whether we could expect a second season of Sharp Objects had what seemed like a firm answer. Last month, HBO chief Casey Bloys cited the show’s dark material as a reason why its star, Amy Adams, wasn’t interested in returning. The series also covered the entirety of Gillian Flynn’s book of the same name—though a similar detail didn’t stop Big Little Lies from expanding beyond its source material into a second season.
At the time, series show-runner and producer Marti Noxon agreed with Bloys, saying that her team wasn’t even discussing a Season 2.
One month later, however, her answer is slightly different.“I mean, I never say never, I guess,” she said in an interview, when asked how firm that “no” really was. She went on to say this: “I think for us, it’s less about whether . . . you know, that team, it was pretty hard to assemble in the first place. The idea of doing [that again] seems next to impossible.” The likelihood of a second season of this series, then, rests somewhere between “never say never” and “next to impossible.”
It’s worth remembering that Big Little Lies was in a similar position at the time of its first season finale last year, with the stars open to returning and series director Jean-Marc Vallée emphatically against the idea: “No, no, this is the perfect ending. There is no way; there’s no reason to make a Season 2,” he said in April of 2017. “That was meant to be a one-time deal, and it’s finishing in a way where it’s for the audience to imagine what can happen.
