Latest Microsoft Leak Suggests Revolutionary Surface Andromeda Cancelled

The last few months have seen anticipation build around a potential new device from Microsoft. The Surface Andromeda would feature a hinged screen that opened out to be a tablet, but would close up into a smartphone form factor. This week has seen reports that the project is close to cancellation.

Meanwhile fans of the concept are busy trying to convince Microsoft that the unannounced project would have a life if it reached retail shelves.

I’m not so sure the latter is possible.

ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley suggests that the loss of Andromeda is down to an executive shake-up in Redmond that has seen a reset on Microsoft’s approach to software and services. The previous tidal wave of changes and updates that included the Andromeda project has been calmed, and there is a lack of momentum behind the project.

Meanwhile

suggests that the Andromeda flavour of Windows 10 is not ready. With no base OS, that means no work to build up third-party app support. And with no app support, you can forget about reaching a wide user-base.

I suspect that lots of small issues like the above have built up over time, and the scales have tipped towards ‘this is not a product to take a risk on’.

Of course we’ve been here before. Although unreleased, it has been acknowledged that Microsoft was working on a Surface Mini as part of the 2014 portfolio. That…
