The unlikely return of Roseanne, with the titular character transformed into a Trump enthusiast, was just another of those insane “plot twists” 2018 likes to throw at us on a weekly basis.
While some left-leaning commentators were uncomfortable with the idea that the character they knew and loved had embraced the controversial Trump administration, the immense popularity of the revival proved that many Americans found the show relatable.And in another ridiculous “plot twist,” President Trump even found space in his schedule to call Barr and congratulate her high ratings. So far, so weird.
But in reviving the sitcom, Roseanne Barr claimed that her intention was to “[open] up civil conversation between people instead of just mudslinging,” an admirable goal indeed, especially during these dangerously divisive days.
It’s obvious that the left and right are not consuming the same media, and when it comes to entertainment, staunch supporters of President Trump are rarely depicted in a sympathetic light. Late-night hosts, satirists, and sitcoms view the President’s supporters as unintelligent and uninformed at best, and outright hateful at worst.
