Ava DuVernay has a Central Park Five series in the works for Netflix

Ava DuVernay is rejoining forces with Netflix for a five-episode scripted series about the Central Park Five, a case that gripped the nation in the late 1980s.

The series, set to debut in 2019, will be created, written and directed by DuVernay in her first project for the streaming service since “13th,” a documentary about racial inequality in the U.

S. prison system.

“The story of the men known as Central Park Five has riveted me for more than two decades,” she said in a statement. “In their journey, we witness five innocent young men of color who were met with injustice at every turn — from coerced confessions to unjust incarceration to public calls for their execution by the man who would go on to be the President of the United States.”

The series will bring to the screen the stories of Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Kharey Wise, one Hispanic and four black Harlem teenagers who were wrongly convicted of raping, beating and leaving for dead a white Central Park jogger in 1989.
