One of the oldest hosting providers, 1&1 was founded in 1988. Given that the majority of companies operating today set out in the late 90s, it is a good result indicative of the company’s ability to constantly develop and adjust its services to current trends.
1&1 boasts an audience of over 8 million users. What makes all these people want to remain loyal to this particular company? Is its performance up to the mark? And what does feedback suggest? Let us take a closer look at it.
1&1: The Technical Aspect
Server performance is a factor that determines whether a hosting provider is worthy of the title of a reliable company. Whatever its marketing efforts, if downtime is its middle name and pages take ages to load, there is no ad that can compensate for it. How can you make sure the provider you are interested in is characterized by great performance?
The first way to do it is to ask someone who has already been their client. However, it is either not easy to find such a person or not wise to believe everything you read on the net. That is why objective statistics is required.
The data provided by Hrank suggests that in the past 30 days, 1&1’s server uptime has been around 99.947%. It is a decent result, but not a perfect one – there are providers out there that score better. However, this is due to a recent drop, which occurred on March 6, 2019, when the uptime was 99.452%. Apart from that, there were no significant uptime issues in the past seven months (since August 2018). Actually, the drop detected on March 6 is the only statistically relevant flaw, and the overall performance in terms of uptime is generally great.
Ok, so if uptime is not a thing to blame them for, what about other characteristics?
Another performance aspect to be taken into account is response time. Rarely are people patient enough to wait for more than 2 seconds for a website to load. That is why servers should be fast. Given that there are other factors that may come into play and affect loading speed (such as poorly written code and poorly optimized content), hosting should be chosen with regard to whether it can potentially contribute to slow loading.
Again, Hrank reports that 1&1’s response time has been around 444 in the past 30 days – quite a good result for most users. In fact, its response time has been really stable: over the course of the past 7 months, it has fluctuated within the range of 408 to 497, with no spikes whatsoever.
So, both crucial performance aspects proved to be above average, which means there is not much to complain about in terms of technical issues. What about feedback?
1&1: Feedback overview
Here is where issues arise. After the 2018 relaunch, the company is now known under the name of 1&1 IONOS, so there may be different ways of naming the brand – keep it in mind when looking for reviews.
Most website review experts name it among very good hosting providers. However, reviews posted by individual (not affiliated) users are controversial, with claims that loading speed is not good enough, UX is awful, there may be billing issues, websites crash, and the usual culprit is customer support (as is the case with virtually any hosting provider, judging from what people write in reviews).
The feedback found online does not speak volumes – it is very difficult to distinguish real reviews from fake ones, i.e. the ones left by competitors or its promoters. However, several reputable sources, including PCMag, are of the opinion that 1&1 IONOS is worth giving a try. Combined with great statistics (which can be considered objective information), what we have found suggests that 1&1 is generally a good option to consider.
