An innovative new conservation effort in Australia is dramatically reducing the amount of wildlife that are killed by cars and passing traffic.
Researchers have been testing a “virtual fence” system that alerts animals to oncoming vehicles.
The system involves installing small alarm units at 80-foot intervals along the edge of a road.
When the alarms detect a car, they begin to emit sirens and flashing lights so that animals will be discouraged from approaching the highway.Additionally, since the units are faced away from the road, they do not interfere with a person’s driving.
