There are some movies where it’s hard to imagine someone else playing an iconic lead role – Arnold is The Terminator, Johnny Depp is Jack Sparrow, etc. But things are much more fluid before the movie actually gets made. Sometimes the iconic nature of the part doesn’t quite shine through, and an actor might be a little wishy-washy about whether the role is right for them…
So, gear up your brain and do your best to picture these, well, pictures without the leading man or woman who stole our hearts – along with box office dollars all over the world.

You’ve surely heard of Jessica Chastain now, but back in 2011 you probably hadn’t – and if she had given in to her insecurities, you might still not know her name.
I didn’t look like Celia Foote, so I remember there was a moment when I was like, ‘I’m not going to go. They clearly don’t want me for this part. It’s my day off. I shoot all night, so I can’t fly to L.A. and then fly back, I just can’t do it.
’ But I was talked into going.
Thank goodness for that!

The part nearly went to Robert DeNiro due to a scheduling conflict on the part of Hanks. Yeah. I know.

Bill Murray wasn’t exactly known as a dramatic actor, but his role in Lost in Translation garnered him his first and only Oscar nod. Sofia Coppola was dying for him to play the part she had written specifically for him, and spent months trying to track down the secretive and un-agented actor before he agreed to the role through a third party.
We went to Japan without knowing if Bill was going to show up – he wouldn’t even tell us what flight he was on because he’s so elusive – so it was nerve-wracking. But he showed up right before we started shooting.
I had no idea!
