A public memorial will be held on Monday for a Nashville musician who was killed in a crime Metro police have called “senseless.
”Kyle Yorlets, 24, was killed Thursday after he was shot in an alley behind his home on the 3200 block of Torbett Street. Police have charged five juveniles in connection with his death.
The memorial will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Belmont University chapel. Funeral arrangements are pending.
What happened?
Nashville police said Friday that the Thursday afternoon shooting of Yorlets appeared to be random.
Investigators believe a group of five young people, aged 12 to 16, had been hanging out in the alley behind Yorlets’ Torbett Street home in a stolen Chevrolet Colorado pickup taken from Oak Grove, Kentucky.
Police say they believe the juveniles saw Yorlets outside, approached him and took his wallet. Investigators say someone shot Yorlets after he refused to give up the keys to his vehicle. Police have not said who shot Yorlets.
After the shooting, police said, Yorlets made it back inside his home where he was found by one of his housemates about an hour later. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses told police they saw “several young persons after the homicide run to a pickup truck.”
Police say the minors later ditched the stolen pickup on Timberland Drive in the Hermitage Precinct, where it was recovered.
