Your Days of Using Someone Else’s Netflix Password Might Be Numbered

Back in 2017, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings made a statement on password sharing, one that encouraged sighs of relief around the world.

“We love people sharing Netflix. That’s a positive thing, not a negative thing.”

Why? Companies like Netflix, Amazon (for their Prime membership) and many others consider password sharing a free way to introduce their services to new customers – or at least, they have in the past.

But at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, a UK startup called Synamedia unveiled an AI-driven tool that can help streaming companies track their users’ account behavior, and use that information to decide whether passwords are being shared more widely than is profitable.
