Part of the struggle that transgender people have with society is helping people to understand their feelings, their struggles, and the uneven path toward becoming the person they’re meant to be inside. So when 28-year-old cartoonist Julia Kaye began the process of transitioning, her friends encouraged her to not only create cartoons to help her deal with her feelings of insecurity and triumph as she passed the milestones along her own personal journey, but to share them so that others could walk it, too.
Julia found the process of creating and sharing to be good all the way around, stating that “it got me to set aside time at the end of my day to reflect on how I was feeling. And because I was making the comics for myself, I allowed myself to be more honest than I might have been otherwise.”
