The Giants offense is missing something, with only the NFL Draft remaining to fill the void.
After trading Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns, the Giants’ passing game lacks a true vertical threat at wide receiver. However, the offense seems to be trending toward even more touches for reigning Offensive Rookie of The Year running back Saquon Barkley, which will place a premium on receivers being willing and able blockers on the outside.
Additionally, the Giants’ current receiver personnel, which features natural slot receivers Sterling Shepard, who was recently signed to a four-year extension, and Golden Tate, reinforces the notion that head coach Pat Shurmur’s offense won’t necessarily need that deep threat to take the top off of a defense.
“His skillset is like Sterling’s,” Shurmur told reporters of Tate, last month during the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. “When we run the ball, they are gritty blockers and you can play them on the edge and in the slot. Then, when you throw the ball, they have both done good work in the slot and have had production outside. You can play both guys wherever.”
