WWE SmackDown Is Using Becky Lynch To Make Charlotte Flair More Popular, And It Will Backfire

WWE inadvertently struck gold when Becky Lynch, through her own doing, became the most popular superstar in the entire company.

The SmackDown Women’s Champion, as she herself will tell you, wasn’t the handpicked golden girl of the women’s division, and it’s highly doubtful that WWE’s higher-ups could have ever envisioned that she would revolutionize women’s wrestling the way she seems to do so on a daily basis.

But Lynch’s unparalleled charisma, her strong Twitter game and her unforgettable takeover of Raw a few weeks ago has transformed “The Irish Lass Kicker” from a cult favorite of diehard pro wrestling fans to, hands down, the hottest act in the business.

Although it seemed like Lynch’s ascension would be derailed when Nia Jax “broke her face” and caused her Survivor Series dream match with Ronda Rousey to be scrapped, it actually had the exact opposite effect. The perfect example of a blessing in disguise, Lynch’s injury has only caused her star power to grow to near mythical proportions. But Lynch still isn’t “The Chosen One,” and so, in true WWE fashion, the company is looking to transfer her undeniable momentum to someone else.

That someone else is Charlotte Flair.

“The Queen” took a page out of the Becky Lynch playbook at Survivor Series when she unleashed a hellacious beating on Ronda Rousey that had the Staples Center crowd going wild and resulted in Flair being more over than she has been at any point during her storied career. Two days later on SmackDown, Flair followed that up with a similar attack on The IIconics that, although it didn’t generate quite the same reaction as the one Rousey, still had fans supporting Flair more than they have for any stretch in recent memory.

The goal of Flair’s sudden violent streak, according to Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer (h/t Ringside News), was to ensure that Flair, like Rousey and Lynch, would get “super-over” with the crowd:
