‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Flashbacks See Angsty Teen Thanos Deciding to Kill Half the Universe

Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo, along with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (the team behind Captain America: Civil War), know just how flimsy a character Thanos has been so far, especially as the lynchpin of an 18-movie series.

Josh Brolin, speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his character in Avengers: Infinity War, describes the plan to flesh out the character, including a surprising reveal: flashbacks to Thanos’ troubled childhood and adolescence.

“He’s different from his family. They’re all Titans and they all look similar, but he was born deformed. You see how he grew up, you see he was like the Quasimodo of this time,” Brolin said. “He stuck out. He was anomaly. He was a freak. And that lent to his apparent insanity.”

His homeworld is destroyed, something to do with the excesses of its people, and Thanos grows up to develop a terrifically stupid plan: the only way to balance the universe is to acquire the absolute power provided by the Infinity Stones and use them to wipe out half the life in the universe.
