It’s been a bloodbath over at Netflix lately, as it’s been killing off its Marvel shows left and right the past few weeks, leading to the inevitable conclusion that all five currently airing shows are going to be cancelled in the end.

It started off somewhat reasonable. Okay, Iron Fist season 2 was a lot better, but not that many people watched it, and it was hard to recover from that disastrous first season. So it’s cancelled.

Then Luke Cage, which is pretty solid, but he’s not a hugely well-known hero, so maybe those numbers weren’t that great either. So it’s cancelled.

And then Daredevil, the original show that spawned this universe had a season that was one of the best I’ve seen across any Netflix original in season 3, and then it’s cancelled. That’s when the alarm bells go off.

We know that Jessica Jones season 3 and The Punisher season 2 are already in production and it seems unlikely those will be abruptly murdered before they air. But after? It feels like there’s a zero percent chance either will survive.

The explanation for this is lengthy, but it pretty much comes down to the fact that not only does Netflix not own the actual rights to these expensive shows, but Disney-Marvel is about to release its own streaming service competitor to Netflix, pulling all its content off its newfound rival as a result. But the question remains, what happens to these shows?

A common refrain I’m hearing is that well, Disney will simply pick up where things left off and pick up most or all of these shows for its own streaming service. And yet, I think that is very, very far from a sure thing.

Disney seems hyper-focused on making high profile prestige shows that directly connect with the movies. We already have a Loki show and a Vision/Scarlet Witch show…
