Maybe you think the religious preferences of your elected officials do not have a bearing on how they make laws, but a new study shows there’s a very direct connection. Despite the ostensible separation of church and state that is the hallmark of the American system of government, religion plays an outsized role in its decisions.The study’s author Daniel Arnon of Emory University explained how he came to this finding:
“I became interested in the topic of the influence of religion on politics after moving to the US from Israel,” said Arnon. “What I found particularly interesting is how the US had seemed like a country in which there is a clear separation of church and state, and yet religious discourse still dominates many aspects of its politics.”
