There is no one currently dominating more spheres of pop culture, and with such distinct style, than Donald Glover. In the first half of 2018 alone he will premiere the second season of his essential series Atlanta, which returns to FX on Thursday; try his hand at mega-budget sci-fi as Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars spin-off Solo, in theaters May 25; and find a spot to keep the Grammy he won last month for the single “Redbone,” recorded under his stage name, Childish Gambino.
How could anyone possibly follow all of that up? As should be a surprise to no one by now, Donald Glover has no intention of slowing down.Childish Gambino will return to the stage in November for the second edition of Pharos, an immersive virtual reality, multi-sensory concert experience that, given its total rejection of traditional performance conventions, sort of defies lexical description. The first edition took place in Joshua Tree, California, in September 2016, consisting of a series of sold-out shows by Glover and his collaborations, all inside a colossal V.R. dome constructed in the middle of the desert—a Burning Man for smart, creative millennials more interested in the experience than documenting it on social media. (Attendees had to seal their phones in lock-bags for the duration of the concert.) Episodes of Atlanta, which was about to premiere on FX, played in a nearby amphitheater; an “Illumination Forest” outside the dome offered a preview of the art projections that were happening inside.
