On this day 20 years ago, the citizens of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland voted overwhelmingly to accept the peace plan known as the Good Friday Agreement. Negotiated and signed by 8 disparate political factions, it was designed to end 30 years of bloody conflict and bombings and establish self-rule for Northern Ireland, which had been under direct British control for 26 years.
