BEIRUT, Lebanon — At least eight intellectuals, writers and activists have been arrested in Saudi Arabia in recent days, including two dual United States-Saudi citizens, rights groups said on Friday, in a striking escalation of Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s crackdown on internal dissent even as Western allies have stepped up pressure on the prince to free political prisoners.
The recent detentions were the latest in a series of high-profile roundups conducted since 2017 under Prince Mohammed, 33, who is the kingdom’s de facto ruler. Saudi Arabia has faced international condemnation since Saudi agents killed the dissident Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post writer and United States resident, last year in a Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
