As someone who has owned a pair of Chuck Taylors consistently from the age of 10 until today, I’m embarrassed to say I have no idea who the man behind the sneaker was.

Chuck Taylor created what is arguably the most iconic athletic shoe in our country’s history – “Chucks” are American as apple pie and baseball.
Taylor was born in 1901 and grew up in Indiana, a state where the relatively new game of basketball was very popular.

After captaining his high school team, Taylor played semi-pro basketball for teams across the Midwest. In 1922, he moved to Chicago to work as a salesman for the Converse Rubber Shoe Co. (later shortened to Converse, Inc.). Taylor quickly became a prized commodity at Converse for his excellent customer rapport.
