Lena Dunham is apologizing big time. But will it be enough?
The creator and star of HBO’s Girls regrets having weighed in on a case involving her friend and series writer Murray Miller, who is accused of sexual assault.
After actress Aurora Perrineau on Friday went to police to accuse Miller of committing sexual assault in 2012, Dunham and executive producer Jenni Konner issued a statement Friday in support of Miller.
Their original statement referred to the current wave of reports of sexual assault and misconduct in Hollywood and praises women for speaking out about their experiences. Then Dunham and Konner cast doubt on accusations made by Perrineau, the daughter of actor Harold Perrineau (Lost, Claws), against their colleague.
It read: “But during every time of change there are also incidences of the culture, in its enthusiasm and zeal, taking down the wrong targets. We believe, having worked closely with him for more than half a decade, that this is the case with Murray Miller. While our first instinct is to listen to every woman’s story, our insider knowledge of Murray’s situation makes us confident that sadly this accusation is one of the 3% of assault cases that are misreported every year.”
The statement concluded: “We stand by Murray and this is all we’ll be saying about this issue.”
But by Saturday evening, Dunham was expressing regret: About the timing of the statement of support.
