Ruth Bader Ginsburg Wows Celebrity-Packed Crowd at Sundance Film Festival

Celebrities crawl all over the Sundance Film Festival, from John Legend and Common to Jane Fonda and Hilary Swank. But no one else generated the level of excitement Ruth Bader Ginsburg did when she entered the CNN Filmmaker studio Sunday for a chat with her pal, NPR correspondent Nina Totenberg.

The associate Supreme Court Justice, who has served on the bench since 1993 and has become the lead dissenter of the conservative-leaning body, is the subject of a new CNN Films documentary titled RBG, from filmmakers Betsy West and Julie Cohen. The movie, set for release later this year, tracks Ginsburg’s rise from her humble beginnings growing up poor in Brooklyn, New York, to founding the women’s project for the A.

C.L.U., to her rise to the highest court in the land. Along the way, she has been the ultimate champion for equal rights for women and minorities. Sundance attendees of all ages were on hand to thank her for her service, or to simply grab a photo of the diminutive judge.

Sundance chairman Robert Redford came to the chat to introduce Ginsburg, saying, “she has enhanced the quality of our festival just by being here.” CNN president Jeff Zucker also was in attendance, as were Sundance programmers John Cooper and Caroline Libresco. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ashley Judd, #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, Jeffrey Wright, and others attended the luncheon with Ginsburg following her chat. To many, it was the highlight of the confab.

Totenberg’s chat with Ginsburg covered personal ground over political, as she questioned the justice about her own experiences with sexual harassment, the cultural touchstones that influence her life, and how she wound up securing her first clerkship after graduating the top of her class at Columbia Law School. Ginsburg even charmed the crowd by doing her impression of Kate McKinnon’s impression of her…
