Walking Dead Season 8 Will Fix Season 7’s Biggest Problem: Rick Grimes

Just a few more days, Walking Dead fans. On Sunday, the zombie drama will premiere its eighth season by launching Rick Grimes and his group into a massive war with Negan and the Saviors. It’s been a long journey to get here—this premiere marks the series’ 100th episode—but, from the looks of it, there’s still plenty of story ahead of us.

Perhaps the most fascinating beat to come, however, is a quieter one: a shift in power from Rick to Maggie, as promised in a preview clip from the premiere.

“After this,” Rick tells Maggie as the group prepares for battle, “I’m following you.”

That moment could be the most defining part of the entire season. Earlier this month at New York Comic Con, Andrew Lincoln promised that Rick’s vow was made in earnest. He’s ready to hand power over to Maggie: “[Rick is] not a politician; he’s a general,” Lincoln said. “He’s a sheriff’s deputy, that’s where he comes from; that’s his DNA . . . Maggie, she’s different. Deanna spotted her as a future political leader—somebody that could run things.” All Rick wants, Lincoln says, is peace—and hopefully once this war is behind them, he’ll have it.

Rick’s commitment to being the head honcho of the zombie apocalypse, as well as his leadership style, have fluctuated wildly throughout the years. But this particular moment feels like a bigger change that could…
