When 17-year-old Jason Brierley met 15-year-old Carli Pangallo, it wasn’t at a coffee shop, in a chemistry class, or through some mutual friends. In fact, they didn’t even meet in reality – they met in an online game (or MMRPG, for those in the know).
Of course, since Carli lived in America and Jason in England, the chances of these two running into each other in the real world were slim to none.
At first she was warned that he was a punk (which Jason freely admits he was as a teen!), so Carli pretty much ignored him. But, as they played together more and more, she saw through his bad boy demeanor and took a liking to the true personality beneath. They eventually exchanged phone numbers, and their relationship blossomed.
Neither had logged into the game looking for love – they were after an escape from their daily lives, full of teenage angst and all the usual high school drama. Jason soon graduated and took a night job. As it turned out, his odd hours worked in their favor, facilitating their communication. By keeping them on a more or less similar schedule, Jason’s new job let them stay in touch through their games, despite the fact that they remained separated by a couple time zones.
We would wake at the same time and sleep at the same time, waiting up for each other to finish work so we could play our games. …When I met her and started to become friends with her, it was as though the one thing I was missing, which I didn’t even realize I was searching for, had been found.
Jason and Carli grew closer as they gelled over a shared sense of humor and an innate ability to hear and help the other through the rough stuff. The two knew they had found that something special. A year passed, and if there was one thing Jason knew, it was that…
