Previously Apple drew a huge amount of heat when it removed the physical 3.5 mm headphone jack from the iPhone, going so far as to call it out as ‘an act of courage’. Since then the presence (or lack of) a 3.5mm headphone jack has becoming a key marketing point for many handset manufacturers – although it tends to be ‘we still have the headphone jack’ that draws the attention, rather than the benefits of a lack of the port.
Now that Apple has conditioned its division of the geekerati that material progress can only be achieved by going completely wireless though the AirPods (other BlueTooth headphones are available but lets not talk about them), it is time to cut another tie to the universal standard.

Tucked away in the avalanche of quarterly reports is one from Apple supplier Cirrus Logic. It is widely believed that Cirrus Logic supplies the digital analogue convertor (DAC) inside the lightning to 3.5mm dongle packaged inside every modern iPhone’s retail box. And a close look at its guidance for the months ahead reveals a loss that suggests another courageous move is about to happen. Apple is set to remove the dongle from the box.
