No one blames you for having a sour taste in your mouth coming out of the Money in the Bank pay-per-view. Not only was it not very good, the top-billed bout — the first-ever women’s MITB ladder match — ended without a woman climbing the ladder and grabbing the coveted briefcase. WWE promised resolution to that on Tuesday, and while it delivered, it was quite obvious that the entire scenario was a pure ratings grab.
While SmackDown did not necessarily live up to expectations, it did advance some storylines and keep the viewer compelled, even in some of its down moments. The three men’s titles all appear headed in an obvious direction with two months left until SummerSlam, and WWE definitely set up some things to play out in the near future.

WWE SmackDown results
Backstage — Daniel Bryan and the women’s division: The entire division — with the exception of Naomi, Carmella and Lana — were on the same page upset about what transpired at Money in the Bank. SmackDown general manager Daniel Bryan, making his return, said they would each get a chance to be heard in the ring. After Carmella’s appearance in the ring, Charlotte Flair made her case one-on-one to Bryan, saying he needed to do the right think because he’s standing in the way of history. Following the night’s first match, Natalya tried to suck up to Bryan by wishing him a happy Father’s Day, but Snuka — sporting a big bruise on her left bicep — interrupted her with threats, prompting Bryan to say he would have a decision soon.
In the ring — Carmella and James Ellsworth: Carmella said everyone has been talking about her the last 48 hours but for the wrong reasons. She explained that the other women all get praise for a variety of reasons, but she outsmarted them all by making plans for her future. Ultimately, she said she won the match “fair and square” because it was no disqualification with no rules, and she compared it to Kane helping Seth Rollins back in 2014. Carmella next called the crowd pathetic for complaining to Bryan and forcing him to make a statement about the result.
Big E def. Jimmy Uso via pinfall: Prior to the match, The New Day cut a worthless promo. Big E had the advantage on Uso in the middle of the match, leading Uso to grab his brother and attempt to leave. Kofi Kingston thwarted that attempt, and Big E soon hit the Big Ending for the victory.
Backstage — Naomi and Lana: Asked her thoughts on the MITB situation, Naomi said she was disappointed but would be ready for anything. Lana then challenged her to a rematch, which Naomi actually accepted for next week. “Lana looked fantatsic — blew away expectations,” JBL said afterwards.
Forty minutes into SmackDown Live coming off a big pay-per-view and nothing of note has happened. The result of the men’s ladder match has not even been mentioned, nor have we seen the new SmackDown superstars.
