Chronicles Of A 50+ Entrepreneur: Keep On Connecting

Author: Jeff Tidwell / Source: Forbes

In the previous articles in this series I wrote about the beginnings of my company ‘Next For Me.’ From inspiration, collaborators, the law, broadcasting, money, conversion-ing and the company as a movement. Then a family emergency caught me off guard. We got introduced to just the right venture capitalists. I moved to a tiny office and acknowledged the lonely days of startup-land.

We’ve started talking to and analyzing our audience needs and worked on our brand architecture. With some guidance we launched our decision to go forward to raise an angel round and how we updated our pitch deck. Then, we simply had to wait and see what would happen with an investor. When we have time on our hands we remember to Always Be Publishing and share some time with other entrepreneurs. An advisor made us think hard on subscriber growth and I was interviewed by StartOut.

Next For Me publishes news and resources for 50+ audiences. We host events across the country to discuss work, our communities, and what’s next.

It was a great week for new connections. As our business expands across the country it makes sense to connect with of the larger national organizations. It really does take a while to know who you are, how you want to spend your time and with whom.

Aging 2.0

We were just getting started last year when the annual Aging 2.0 conference “Optimize” was hosted in San Francisco. Our advisor Chip Conley spoke at Optimize and he told me about it. I kept my eye on them and there was eventual synchronicity.

Aging 2.0 describes their mission as:

Aging2.0 supports innovators taking on the biggest challenges and opportunities in aging. Aging2.0 is international, interdisciplinary and intergenerational – focused on changing the conversation from 1.0 (focused on local, clinical, siloed approaches) to 2.0 (collaborative, lifestyle-oriented, opportunity-driven) – hence the name: Aging2.0.

Over the past 6 years, Aging2.0 has hosted more than 550 events around the world and relies on 50+ volunteer Chapters to build and connect our 25,000 person community in 20+ countries. Aging2.0 has 150 corporate Alliance members and works with ‘CEOs’ – Chief Elder Officers, who help us design with, not for, older people.

Truly an impressive history and community for a relatively young non-profit.
