Making Sense of Kanye West’s Trump-and-Kaepernick Look

Spoiler alert: we can’t.

On Thursday morning, shortly after Christine Blasey Ford began testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kanye West arrived at the New York offices of The Fader

(He redesigned it, he said: “I changed the brim…and I put positive energy into the hat.”) Confusingly, he also wore a sweatshirt with “Colin Kaepernick” scrawled across the chest—perhaps as a gesture of solidarity, or trolling, or galaxy-brained wisdom, and very possibly all three.

West was in New York ahead of his scheduled performance on the Saturday Night Live premiere, where he’ll presumably perform tracks from his soon-to-be-released album, Yandhi. This promotional sprint comes at the end of a heady summer marked by his return to public life, his release of ye (and four other West-produced albums), his endorsement of Donald Trump’s “dragon energy,” and a barrage of social-media posts about knowledge, fear, design, and technology. It’s all been rather a lot, and it didn’t stop at the Fader.
