Now that we’ve got that settled, let’s get to the topic that’s been smoldering throughout Season 2: the Pearson house fire and its connection to the death of Jack (Milo Ventimiglia), the husband of Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and father of the Big Three.

Viewers have known since the beginning of Season 1 that Jack died in a tragic, way-too-early death, with the show slowly dropping clues and an occasional misdirection about its cause.
The Season 2 premiere revealed the scorched remains of the Pearson dwelling, captured by a haunting scene of newly widowed Rebecca wailing inconsolably in her car as she looked on from the curb. The timing made clear that the fire and Jack’s death, which occurred in 1998 when the kids were 17, were intertwined, but it didn’t explain how.
