28 years ago today, union leader Lech Wałęsa won Poland’s first popular election in the history of the country. A charismatic electrician who encouraged illegal worker boycotts, and was jailed for it, his emotional, shirtsleeves populist appeal helped topple Communism in Poland through nonviolent means—by negotiating with Party officials, and calling for nationwide strikes that hamstrung the county.
