The NYC Public Library Spent a Day Forgiving Children’s Fines

On October 19th of this year, the New York Public Library did something pretty amazing – they gave children who had seen their borrowing privileges suspended due to overdue fines the opportunity to have the slate wiped clean. This was no small deal in a city the size of New York.

160,000 children were included in the offer, and the company underwriting the loss, the JPB Foundation, estimated the cost to be around $2.24 billion.

The majority of those 160,000 kids were from the city’s poorest neighborhoods. Neighborhoods like Harlem, where the New York Times talked to 17-year-old Octavia Loving. She had some thoughts on the rules that block poor children from checking out more books once they rack up enough fines.
