In other shocking news, steady employment, dual incomes, and education help people make money. Furthermore, the conditions (situational, mental, emotional, financial, physical etc.) which contribute to someone maintaining steady employment, graduating high school, and not having children when outside of a committed relationship also contribute to building wealth.

None of this is useful in assessing how to reduce poverty and make it less sticky. The problems cannot be written off as “children of poor people are more likely to make bad life choices and remain poor” unless your sole purpose in considering the subject is finding ways to absolve yourself/the collective society of which you are a part of any responsibility.

Issues like lead poisoning being much more common among people in poverty, over policing and harsher sentencing leading to more family fragmentation, less access to and knowledge of contraception is another, concentrated poverty leaving kids with far fewer examples of good actions yielding good results is another.

Consider that last one a bit, because even if you do all the right things, bad luck and no margin for error (as is the case with people who come from poverty) can mean you get stuck, so…
