Weekend Box Office: ‘Kingsman 2’ Lording Over ‘Ninjago,’ ‘It’ With $40M-Plus Bow

‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’ is certainly no slouch, while indie horror pic ‘Friend Request’ isn’t scaring up much business and Darren Aronofsky’s ‘mother!’ is dropping fast.

Director Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle is easily lording over the competition at the North American box office, where the cheeky action-comedy is on course to gross roughly $16 million on Friday for a projected debut of $40 million or more from 4,003 theaters, according to early returns.

Friday’s gross will include $3.4 million in Thursday-night previews, more than double the $1.4 million in previews earned by Kingsman: The Secret Service. For the weekend, Kingsman 2 will also come in ahead of Secret Service, which debuted to $36.2 million in February 2015 on its way to earning $414.4 million globally.

Vaughn’s sequel reteams the British filmmaker with his Secret Service stars Taron Egerton and Colin Firth. Newcomers to the budding franchise include Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal and Jeff Bridges.
