Let’s Avoid Dragging ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 To 2019 Please

The plan for the last two seasons of Game of Thrones has already ruffled some feathers among fans, most of whom are not thrilled with the idea that seasons 7 and 8 will be dramatically shortened to just 7 and 6 episodes apiece.

This year, we’ve already seen season 7 delayed into July when it normally would be over by then, but now the bad news just keeps coming.

According to a recent interview with EW, HBO programing president Casey Bloys talked about how the showrunners get full autonomy from HBO for whatever they need, including more time. Which led to the question:

EW: So as of now, the final season could air in 2018 and/or in 2019 depending on their needs?

Bloys: Yeah. They have to write the episodes and figure out the production schedule. We’ll have a better sense of that once they get further into the writing.

There are echoes of The Sopranos in this idea, these long gaps when it comes to the final season of a show. The Sopranos’ penultimate season ended in June 2004, and the show didn’t return for its final season until March 2006. Then there was another year-long break before “Part 2” of the final season arrived. The big difference there, however, was that Part 1 was 12 episodes and Part 2 was 9 episodes, which is a far cry from what we’re getting with the 7 and 6 episode final two seasons of Game of Thrones.

As a fan, the idea that not only are these dramatically shortened seasons, but we might have to wait until 2019 for the final batch of six episodes is just exhausting.

I sort of understood the initial split. I guess we are reaching a logical conclusion of the show…
