This Week in Mobile is a weekly podcast available on Apple iTunes or Google Play where I bring you up to speed on the top mobile news stories of the week:

  1. Android P is the next version of Google’s mobile operating system which was unveiled last week at Google I/O, the annual conference for the search engine’s developer community. The first thing Android users will have to to get familiar with is the new Gesture Based Navigation which is very similar to the user interface of the iPhone X: swipe up for the list of apps in memory, swipe right or swipe left to quickly switch applications, and even a virtual, elongated Home button! After the notch, Android smartphones will now also be adopting the iPhone X gesture navigation. However, for the first time, the beta of a future Android version will be available on phones others than Google’s own, including the Essential Phone, Sony’s Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 2S and the upcoming OnePlus 6. But no support yet for Samsung or Huawei phones because they are heavily customized and require more work to get the new operating system.
