The Walking Dead fans can’t stop buzzing during the offseason due to all the official and unofficial news coming out about the show.

The biggest story of the year has been Andrew Lincoln leaving the show during or after season 9, with the assumption that his departure meant that Rick was being killed off, because how else does anyone leave The Walking Dead?
But what if there was a way to save Rick? A way for Lincoln to split for as long as he wants, but in a way that doesn’t force AMC to kill off the character?
It sounds far-fetched, and it kind of is, but a theory is forming about how this might happen, bolstered in part by recent developments in season 8 and reveals about season 9.
Yesterday, it was revealed in the first season 9 poster that The Walking Dead is heading to Washington DC, at least in some capacity, as evidenced by the destroyed Capitol building. Also on the poster, escaping no one’s eye, is the mysterious helicopter we saw a few times in season 8, most recently one that was supposed to meet with Jadis until Negan screwed up whatever plan was unfolding. Even with season 9’s time jump, the helicopter is still around, and this plotline very well may be the entire crux of season 9, with the show delaying or flat-out skipping the Whisperer war now that key character, Carl, is no longer on the show.
So, this is the theory, as much of a stretch as it may be. Instead of Rick just being killed by walkers or a new invading group, we could have:
- Rick, out on some sort of mission with a team, is ambushed by the helicopter group.
- Instead of killing him, they subdue the others and take him alone. They fly away, leaving members of Rick’s group to report back what happened to the rest of the community.
- Negan, imprisoned, hears about this, and tells everyone…
