The College Football Playoff semifinals are a day away, and not even the suspension of stud Clemson defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence or a less-than-100 percent ankle of Alabama star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa can keep the Tigers (minus-10.5) and Crimson Tide (minus-14), who will also be without starting offensive lineman Deonte Brown, from remaining huge favorites.
None of this, however, will prevent the casual college football fan from tuning in Saturday. Both games still offer the best entertainment value this bowl season.
There is plenty of individual talent, aside from Lawrence or Brown, on the field worth watching, and both games are higher-stakes alternatives to late December NBA or NHL action.In the Cotton Bowl, Notre Dame’s defense will be tested like no other time this season. Clemson’s offense, led by freshman phenom quarterback and the other Lawrence, Trevor, and running back Travis Etienne, tends to get overshadowed by its daunting defense. Yet, the Tigers (13-0) have failed to score 30 points just three times this season.
Notre Dame (12-0), on the other hand, is as complete of a team as there is throughout the land. The Irish yield 17.3 points per contest and have an offense that is beyond serviceable. However, of the four ranked…
