Spider-Man: Homecoming Has Massive Marvel Cinematic Universe Plot Hole

Spider-Man: Homecoming doesn’t shy away from its connections to the grander Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that decision has also led to an unfortunate side effect.

Spoilers incoming for Spider-Man: Homecoming, so if you haven’t seen it yet you’ve been warned.

A flashback is seen early in the film showing Adrian Toomes and his construction crew working to clean up New York after the battle in Avengers (via ScreenRant). Damage Control takes ownership of the site away from them, followed by a time jump to “eight years later”.

It’s then that Toomes is shown with the Vulture suit, but that is also where the timeline of the MCU takes a hit. If you follow the general timeline for the MCU, especially in connection with Civil War, Homecoming is supposed to be set sometime in 2016 to fall in line the current day theme of new Marvel films. The problem is that The Avengers is understood to be in the year 2012. If that’s the case, then 8 years later puts Homecoming in the year 2020, and that obviously throws that whole “current day” premise out the window.

Since everything has been built off of The Avengers, including films like Iron Man 3 (six months later), Captain America: Winter Solider (two years after), and Avengers: Age of Ultron (a year before Civil War), that date seems to…
