Watch the chilling autobiographical drama “The Tale” on HBO. And kick off Memorial Day weekend with “From Here to Eternity.”
What’s on TV
THE TALE (2018) 10 p.m. on HBO; also on HBO streaming platforms. After Jennifer (Laura Dern), a documentarian, receives a call from her mother (Ellen Burstyn) about a short story Jennifer wrote at 13, she unravels a troubling part of her past.
Flashbacks take us to that summer, when Jennifer spent lots of time with her horse-riding instructor, Mrs. G (Elizabeth Debicki), and her running coach Bill (Jason Ritter). The three shared an unusual relationship, one that young Jennifer misconstrued. That realization motivates adult Jennifer to confront an unsettling fact and reconnect with Mrs. G and Bill 30 years later. Based on the real life of the writer and director Jennifer Fox, “The Tale” is a push “to disseminate a hard truth,” Margaret Lyons wrote in her review. “And it’s effective. Frighteningly, unforgettably so.”
