Every autumn, right around the time the rice is ready to reap, towns around Japan hold matsuri (festivals) in celebration of the harvest. But in Yamanaka-Onsen, a mountain town in the Ishikawa Prefecture, that celebration takes on a unique charm with the parading of a giant miso bowl.
Most harvest festivals will find townspeople parading down their streets hoisting a portable shrine, or mikoshi. At Yamanaka-Onsen’s Koi-Koi Matsuri Festival, locals honor the area’s history of producing lacquered cups and bowls with a special mikoshi in the shape of a miso bowl. Crafted of fiberglass, the giant bowl makes its journey atop the shoulders of around 25 local artisans….
