No country locks up a greater proportion of its citizens than the United States of America, with the 2.3 million Americans currently incarcerated making up nearly a quarter of the entire world’s prison population.
The reasons for this sad statistic are myriad and suggest that something is seriously wrong with the system, particularly when you consider that 77% of the state prisoners released in 2005 were re-arrested by 2010. People hit rock bottom, make mistakes and seem to get stuck in a spiral that going to jail only seems to exacerbate, rather than help to rehabilitate.
