Hundreds of members of the gilets jaunes movement are expected to descend on the suburb in West Paris on Saturday for their sixth weekend of demonstrations.
The former royal city was a focal point of the French revolution and the October 1789 march on the palace by the Parisian mob led to the overthrow and subsequent execution of King Louis XVI. The leaders of the grassroots movement, which has won widespread public support, have also encouraged protesters to block trucks at French borders.
The Versailles chateau and gardens in the wealthy suburb 12 miles west of the capital is one of Europe’s top tourist attractions.
According to a prefecture official quoted by daily Ouest France, about 1,400 people have said they would take part in the march following a call to demonstrate in Versailles by one of the yellow vest leaders on Thursday.
