Gamers united behind a new look for the healer Mercy in Overwatch, buying enough of the pink $15 skin and $30 t-shirts to pour $12.7 million into the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
The most impressive part of the fundraising may have been the tight timeframe: for the skin, players had just two weeks to make the purchase (between May 8 and May 21), and the t-shirt was a special printing that also is no longer available.
That’s $6.35 million a week, with many players still pinging in Blizzard Entertainment blogs now asking for more opportunities to buy the items. Fans created some fairly impressive Pink Mercy art during that period as well.
